Today’s recipe is very simple but always good. We are going to make tomato and basil sauce and it will only take about 20 minutes 😉. It is good with any type of pasta, gnocchi, rice and more. If you learn how to make this simple recipe you have learned the fundamentals of every tomato based sauce that you can think of. Basically, they all start from this recipe, and than you can add any ingredients of you choice; from mushrooms, tuna, pancetta or olives etc. etc. etc.


  • 2 cloves of garlic
  • 2 tbsp. Extra Virgin Olive Oil
  • 1 can Strained tomatoes or finely chopped tomatoes
  • ¼ cup water
  • salt
  • fresh basil

Giulia’s directions:

In a large saucepan sauté garlic with extra virgin olive oil and let it cook for a few minutes until golden brown. Add strained tomatoes and simmer over medium-low heat for about 30 minutes adding about ¼ cup of water to prevent the sauce from thickening too much.

When the sauce is ready, remove from heat and add some fresh basil. Crushed red pepper or black pepper can be added if desired.

Your tomato and basil sauce is ready for your favorite pasta or dish.
