The Aperitivo is a drink that we like to have before lunch but particularly before dinner, maybe after a long day at work or on the weekend. It is an important opportunity for Italians to get together in a casual, social setting. It’s generally at a bar and can be a simple glass of wine or a cocktail accompanied by delicious finger food. There are many popular Aperitivo cocktails, like Spritz, Americano, Negroni etc…. but the Aperitivo is not just about a drink — the food that comes with it is also very special. As we say, “L’ appetito vien mangiando.” That means, “The appetite comes with eating,” and that’s why we start eating before sitting at the table.
If you have an aperitivo before lunch it won’t have so many selections of finger food. You will probably be served only chips, peanuts and olives. The aperitivo before dinner is usually served between 6:00pm and 9:00pm. Usually is a buffet but some nice bars also have table service.
If you go to Italy don’t miss this experience! It’s one of my MUST DO’s every time I go. 🍸 🍴 🍷
